There are many methods of engaging students in large lecture halls other than just lecturing. Collaborative learning, games, senarios, case studies, quick powerpoint quizzes and much more can be used to keep students actively learning.

Teaching Techniques in Large Medical Lectures
1- Turn the tables around and have the students in small groups meet and report on a topic. Let them also create a five question quiz about their presentation to give to the rest of the large (100-300) lecture hall. 4- Take a large class and break it into groups of ten. Arrange this in advance on a table or excel sheet. Assign all of the groups a Case problem and ask them to solve it in 30 minutes. Have each group come up to the front of the class and report on their problem solving for the medical case they were given. Use two classes if necessary
2- Get a large mayonnaise jar number 10 that they use in College cafeterias and have several bags of sand, pea pebbles, river stones, and blue stones. Fill the jar with the blue stones first and ask the class is the jar full? Get a discussion going. Ask for a vote yes or no. Next, fill the jar with the river stones which are smaller. Shake the jar around to get them to settle. Ask again is the jar as full as it can be now? Check for answers. Repeat the proces with the pea pebbles which are even smaller. Lastly, repeat the process with sand. Now what have we learned. Not to jump to decisions too early. Philosophically what have we learned, "don't worry about the small things in life, they will fall into place like the loaded jar." 5- Using a bingo cage have each student in the class pick a number and letter from BINGO with the proper number ranges B 1-15 etc. Now have a student rotate the cage of bingo balls and call out the winning numbers. Students who have the winning number get to stand up and pick the student to their left to answer a Medical Question on the reading.
3- Playing checkers on Powerpoint. Divide the class in half 150 on one side and 150 on the other side. Pick a team captain for each side of the class. Show a checkerboard you made on Powerpoint with the pieces in place. Keep the program in the edit mode not the show mode.
For each correct answer to the questions you are going to ask each team gets to move their color checkers one move. Have the two teams each submit 5 questions from each student on 3x5 cards. Use these questions from the lecture or textbook to run the game. If an interactive electronic white board is available have students go up to the board and move the piece. If not have them move it on the computer you are using.
6- Present a Powerpoint slide show and every 5 slides include a Question for the class to answer. Tell them to write it down, number the answer and hand in all the answers as they leave the class.
